Tips and Techniques for Children Diagnosed with ADHD

Red Door Learning Montessori is dedicated to providing a creative and comforting learning environment for all children diagnosed with an array of learning challenges.  One group that is especially close to our hearts consists of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  Many children diagnosed with ADHD struggle with impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention, which all can cause issues at home and at school and with peers.

Here at RDLM it is our goal to make sure these children are lovingly accepted and cared for in a manner that does not make them feel ostracized.  Below are 5 tips and strategies that may help parents and caregivers reduce ADHD symptoms in their children. Together, we can help empower all children to live successful lives that will lead to brighter futures!

1. Routine and Structure

It’s important to have routine and structure for any child.  This will help them to know what to expect and when to expect it.  A daily schedule that consists of the same meal, nap, bed, and play times will help to soothe the chaos of daily life and provide them lifestyle habits that will benefit them later in life.

2. Rewards and Motivation

Who doesn’t need a little motivation? There’s nothing wrong with rewarding a child for a job well done. It doesn’t have to be a physical gift, or something store bought, praise and affection can go a long way. What is most important is to have immediate, short term rewards.

3. Stay Active and Eat Healthy Snacks

Children with ADHD have a hard time focusing, because of their feelings of hyperactivity.  For this reason, it’s important that you allow your child to be active. Whether it's sports, family walks, or playing in the back yard give them the opportunity to let out some of that excitement!

In addition, be sure you are not providing your child with snacks that are loaded with sugars that will only make him or her more active.  Healthy snacks like cheese and crackers can fuel them up but not overload them with sugar.

4. Get Involved with School

We always welcome the support and encouragement of our parents.  Ask us questions?  We want to partner with you to be sure your child is having the best and most beneficial time with us.  Tell us your concerns, share your ideas, or have a laugh with us.
