What is ALD?

In today’s day and age knowledge is power and the sharing of information means there are less prejudices and misunderstandings.  Red Door is dedicated to sharing disability awareness world wide so that those with “unique” abilities are treated with an equal amount of love and respect.  Today, we are focusing on adrenoleukodystrophy, an inherited genetic disorder.

While it is relatively rare, it is a serious condition that should be recognized.  Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) impairs the myelin sheath, the membrane surrounding the neurons present in the brain and spinal cord.  Those diagnosed with ALD have a very long chain of fatty acids in the brain and the adrenal cortex. A reduction in the myelin and impairment of the nervous system and adrenals are the principal features of the condition.

There are 2 subtypes of ALD. The commonest is X-linked ALD, involving an anomalous gene on the X chromosome. Females are usually carriers of ALD, since they have 2 X chromosomes, whilst, males have 1 X chromosome and consequently are more brutally afflicted.

Symptoms of ALD depend on the type of adrenoleukodystrophy that affects the individual. The following 3 types are seen, and these are the clinical manifestations:

Childhood Cerebral Type:

• Altered muscle tone, muscle spasms and spasticity
• Cross eyes
• Decreased comprehension of verbal communication
• Worsening of the handwriting
• Poor fine motor activity
• The child id hyperactive
• Hearing diminishes
• Nervous system decline
• Seizures
• Paralysis
• Swallowing becomes difficult
• Visual impairment
• Coma

Adrenomyelopathy Type:

 • Control over urination is lost
• Great muscle weakness
• Stiffness of the legs
• Memory loss

Addison’s Type:

• Appetite loss and weight reduction
• Pigmentation of the skin, skin discoloration
• Muscle wasting
• Muscle fatigue
• Vomiting
• Coma

It is our hope that by spreading awareness of this disorder we can negate the potential to make children and adults diagnosed with ALD feel isolated and alone.  Every person, regardless of color, creed, or physical attributes has something special to offer.  Our Red Door is always open to accept others with their special and unique abilities.
