Encouraging a Sense of Giving in Your Child

The Holiday season is always a time for giving good cheer to those around us.  It’s the time of year when we think of others and strive to find gifts or tokens of our appreciation for the past year.  This is the perfect time to encourage a sense of giving in your child! Toddlers and preschoolers are by nature self-centered in the since they are learning all about their own world! This is new to them, and they are learning and exploring at a rapid rate.  While this is understandable and the “me, me, me” stage is a healthy part of their development, it’s also a time to gently encourage them to think of others, and to be willing to share and give.

Here are three fun activities that will help your child develop a sense of giving and charity towards others.

1. Encourage Generosity. Allow your child to donate clothes or toys to less fortunate children. This will encourage them to have empathy for others and to appreciate what they have.  There are plenty of opportunities to give this Holiday Season from toy drives to food pantries, getting your child in on the action is a wonderful way to let them see the difference you can make for someone else in need.

2. Write Thank You’s. Have your child write a thank you note or make a thank you card to someone they are grateful for, and explain how that person makes them feel thankful.

3. Christmas Blessings Craft. Cut out Christmas stars, and allow your child to write the things they are grateful for. Hang them from the ceiling so everyday they can see their Christmas blessings.  They can add to them whenever they want. This will develop a since of gratefulness for the things they have.

These activities will be fun for the whole family and, most importantly, they will help your child to get into the sense of giving this Christmas season.  Red Door wishes you the absolute best this Holiday season.  May your days be filled with love and happiness.
